Login and Account
How do I log in to the LMS? (Students)
Address: lms.hku.edu.tr. Log in with the institutional username and password you use for the University’s e-mail, Portal and wireless network (Wi-Fi) services. Username: your student number if you enrolled in 2025 or later; first.last if you enrolled before 2025 (do not add @std.hku.edu.tr). Your Student Information System (OBS) password does not work.
How do I log in to the LMS? (Academic and administrative staff)
Log in with your institutional username and password. Username: the part of your institutional e-mail address before the “@” sign (example: first.last). Select “Staff / Instructor” at login. Your OBS password does not work.
How do instructors assigned from outside the university log in?
Enter your Turkish Republic ID number as your username and your Student Information System (OBS) password as your password, and select the “Staff / Instructor” option. This method does not work if you have an institutional e-mail account; in that case, log in with your institutional account.
Can I log in with my OBS password?
No. You cannot log in with your OBS password; use your institutional username and password. The only exception is instructors assigned from outside the university who do not have an institutional e-mail account.
I forgot my password. What should I do?
You can renew your password on the Portal “Forgot Password” page: Portal – Forgot Password. A verification code is sent to the mobile phone number registered in the system. Your new password must not contain any part of your first name or surname. There is no password reset in the LMS; the LMS password screen directs you to the Portal and to the support channels.
The LMS asks for a verification code. Why?
For protected accounts, a verification code is sent by SMS to your registered mobile phone during login.
Courses and Content
What Is Distance Education?
It is a type of instruction in which teaching activities are carried out online, synchronously and/or asynchronously, using various information and communication technology tools, without requiring the instructor and students to be in the same location.
What Is Synchronous Distance Education?
It refers to instructors and students holding live classes simultaneously with the help of video conferencing/chat tools.
What Is Asynchronous Distance Education?
Course materials are prepared in advance by the instructor and shared with students. Students can access the course materials at any time they wish.
How Is the Distance Education Process Conducted at HKU?
At HKU, some of the courses you take during a semester are delivered through distance education, synchronously and/or asynchronously. Synchronous classes are held via Zoom; asynchronous content (course materials, assignments, class recordings) is in the LMS.
How Can I Participate in Distance Education Courses?
By logging in to the HKU Learning Management System (LMS) at lms.hku.edu.tr, you can access the course schedule, content and materials, assignments, Zoom live classes, class recordings and meetings.
My course is not visible in the LMS. What should I do?
Your courses come from your advisor-approved course registration in the OBS. Synchronization between the OBS and the LMS runs every day at 06:00 and 18:00; once your registration is approved, your course appears in the LMS at the latest after the next synchronization. If there is no approved course registration, the course will not appear; in that case, please contact your department/advisor.
(Instructors) What is the file limit when uploading course materials?
A single file can be up to 50 MB. Supported file types: pdf, doc(x), ppt(x), xls(x), txt, zip, rar, jpg/jpeg, png.
(Staff) How are permissions granted in the LMS?
Management roles are granted by UZEM on the LMS “Settings › Roles and permissions” screen. The instructor and student roles come from the OBS. Assigning an additional instructor or assistant to a course is done by UZEM.
What happened to my courses and content in the old system (OYS)?
The course lists of past semesters have been transferred to the LMS as an archive (the official record is the OBS). For requests about content in the old system, please use the support channels.
How Is Information Security Ensured?
Data is stored on the University’s own servers. The KVKK (Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698) is observed in the use of personal data. For detailed information, you may visit hku.edu.tr/kvkk.
Live Classes and Recordings
How do I join a live class?
Live classes are held via Zoom. As the class time approaches, a “Join” link appears on the LMS Dashboard and on the course page.
Where can I watch class recordings?
You can watch them on the “Recordings” screen in the LMS menu; only the recordings of the courses you are enrolled in are shown. Class recordings are published on the Recordings screen in the LMS; you can still watch the recordings of your enrolled courses after the semester ends. Recordings are collected automatically from Zoom and appear some time after the class ends. Shared classes (merged courses) are defined in the system by UZEM.
